The motorcoach trip from Whittier to Talkeetna features two different “legs” of travel. The first portion of the trip travels 60 miles between Whittier and Anchorage and takes just over two hours. From Whittier, the trip begins with a drive through the Anton Anderson Whittier tunnel, at 2.5 miles the longest tunnel in North America. You will then travel through Portage Valley to the Seward Highway, one of the most scenic highways in Alaska. The highway follows the Turnagain Arm which is nestled between the Kenai and Chugach Mountains. The motorcoach travels directly to the Dena'ina Civic Center upon arrival in Anchorage. You will need to identify your luggage to be transferred onto the motorcoach bound for Talkeetna. Enjoy lunch on your own in downtown Anchorage. The second portion of your trip to Talkeetna covers about 110 miles and takes about 2.5 hours. Your journey continues mid-afternoon with travel on the Glenn Highway. You will pass JBER, Alaska’s largest military facility and the community of Eagle River. Just past the Knik and Matanuska Rivers and the Palmer Hay Flats, the coach will turn onto the Parks Highway. Once past the town of Wasilla, the highway traffic lightens and the motorcoach travels through wooded areas, past many recreational lakes and over streams popular with the local fishermen. Be sure to watch for views of Mt. Denali. You know you are getting close to your destination when the motorcoach turns onto the Talkeetna Spur Road. Travel about 14 miles to the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge.
The Park Connection bus line operates the transfer between Whittier and Talkeetna only on days that cruise ships arrive into Whittier. This trip connects our Whittier cruise transfer service between Whittier and Anchorage with our daily “Park to Park” route that travels to Talkeetna and continues onto Denali. This trip features a morning departure from the Whittier cruise terminal, a lunch break on your own in the Anchorage area, and concludes at the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge, located about one mile from downtown Talkeetna.
